THE GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION (GDPR)

EU Data Protection Directive - Coming into force 25/05/18

This new piece of EU legislation has a direct impact on business in Ireland. This means that organisations involved in any sort of data processing needs to be aware  of both the regulations and obligations that it imposes. 

PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE

€5,000 penalty per offence (i.e: unsolicited email) up to a fine of up to €250,000 or 4% of turnover

DATA ACQUISITION

New rules that must be adhered to in the collection of personal information and how it is managed.

DATA MANAGEMENT

You have a responsibility to maintain the data you acquire. This must be done through regular updates and removal of old data. You are responsible for the accuracy of the data.

USE OF DATA

The new rules strictly enforce how you may use customer data. This covers email, phone and direct mail.

CUSTOMER REQUESTS

A customer has a number of rights that you are obliged to adhere to. These include the use of data, the right to be "forgotten", do not contact options and the passing of information to 3rd parties on request.
